In the UK, many of the breeds we think of as traditional companion dogs sit within The Kennel Club's Toy Group. This includes breeds that were primarily developed as companions and lapdogs, although not every small breed in the group has exactly the same history. Some have sporting, vermin-control, watchdog or other working ancestry hidden behind their modern role as family pets.
